Build Your Foundation as a Coach: Define Your Philosophy (Part 2 of 5 The Art of Business for Coaches Blog Series)

Hillary take a standHave you ever noticed how quotes are used in books, social media, speeches, websites, movies and almost everywhere?!?

Think about it, do you have quotes on your desk, do you share quotes on social media, do you feel like your day was made when someone captures what you feel in words?

When you take a step back and look at what’s really being shared it’s that person’s philosophy, what they stand for and believe in. What do you believe in?

I’m thrilled to be continuing with my 5-part blog series all about Breaking the Rules: The Art of Business for Coaches. I was inspired to create this, so I could help you see what really needs to happen, from my perspective, before spending money on a logo, website, tagline… before you really know who it is you are here to coach. These posts are here to give you a new view on business, and real steps you can take now to dig deep and find your unique way as a coach.

If you missed the first post, head over here to check it out.

Ready to dive in and learn my methodology, for how to be an artist in the design of your unique coaching business?

The first step is to know your position on topics like purpose, money, relationships, spirituality, religion, lifestyle, health, self-care, and so on because…

Your philosophy is your foundation, the core, and what is behind everything you do as a coach: your brand, your message, how you stand out and so much more. Your core beliefs are what make you stand out and allow you to create a powerful platform for your work.

This is what many successful artists, authors, speakers, and companies put their heart into.

Not only will you break the rules this week, you will open up to your own creativity and ask deeper questions to get to the core of what makes you unique as a coach. This is to create freedom, to challenge what you believe and to see if what you believe is adopted from others, or what you truly stand for.

Having this clarity will make everything else easier and help you build your confidence too.

Knowing what you stand for without caring what others think is what sets apart good coaches from great coaches.

Now, what do you BELIEVE makes a good coach or a great coach?

What do you BELIEVE about life, death, birth, relationships, creativity, meditation, diets, etc… Being able to take a stand and have a point of view may seem scary, this is normal and know this is an exploration, a creative process that will help you uncover your truth.

Those who take a stand for what they BELIEVE are not afraid to disagree with the masses and put a stake in the ground to say, this is what I believe in, even if it make waves.

Let’s take it a step further. Have you ever looked at products or services you invest in and asked yourself, what is their PHILOSOPHY?

Let’s play for a moment and look under the hood…

  • What does your yoga studio BELIEVE in?
  • What does the car your drive take a stand for?
  • What does your fave magazine BELIEVE in?
  • What does your supermarket take a stand for?

If you haven’t noticed already, you may start to to see what their brands represent. What sets them apart from their competition, and what makes them a leader in their specific niche.

The art of defining your own philosophy is to keep asking yourself deep questions and question what it is you believe in.

It may be scary for you to define what it is you BELIEVE in at first…

Because you may make some waves (hopefully), go against the norm and actually stand out, which can and will push some buttons. This is a good thing, when buttons are pushed and people don’t like what you’re doing this is a sign you’re on the right track.

Guess what? There are many more who do agree, and those are the people waiting for you to take a stand for them.  It’s your job as a coach to lead people back to their own truth by taking a stand and owning yours. Click to tweet…

Pretty cool stuff, right?

Note: it’s not about pushing buttons to push buttons and get out your angst like a punk band, it’s more a place to be a voice for yourself and for those you are here to serve as a coach.

Identifying your core beliefs will reveal a treasure chest of insight that you can use to build a solid foundation for your business. Click to tweet…

This will also help to make you the go-to person for your area of expertise as a coach.

And remember, this will evolve as you evolve over time too!

Madonna, Oprah, Tony Robbins, Brene Brown, Ekhart Tolle, A Course in Miracles and Apple all have evolved into what they BELIEVE today, and over time this will keep evolving. It’s what they stand for that makes them stand out and attract their tribe.

Now, take a quiet moment to return yourself to a beginner’s mind.

Please put aside the “I already know this” thoughts and let yourself explore, experiment and have some fun in the process of building a strong foundation for your coaching business.

I suggest taking a few days off from reading or listening to other people’s stuff, so you can get to the core of what you BELIEVE. As you do the exercise below, note if anything you BELIEVE is actually from others, or if it’s truly from you.

Feeling a little nervous? Then you may want to say this Permission Statement once before you start: “I give myself permission to release the need to please others. I am enough and ready to take a stand for what I believe in as a coach. And so it is…” Click to tweet…

Now, answer the following questions to see what it is you BELIEVE in and WHY.

To get the best results make sure to create an environment that works for you and have your notepads, journals, markers paper or whatever you like to use to create your art ready. It’s going to be lots of fun.

  • What’s your PHILOSOPHY about life, death, birth, relationships, creativity, meditation, diets, beauty, women, men, marriage, starting something new, happiness, depression, work, career, motherhood, fatherhood, sex, love, changing a habit, completing something, goal setting, fear, purpose, passion, prosperity, religion, spirituality, money, work life balance, etc..

Pick the topics you are attracted to coaching others with or if you are already coaching what it is you’re helping people with. AND you can put in any topic you read about, feel drawn to coach about or what people come to you for help for.]

Then, once you get your list of what you connect with from the above list or add in what you want to define your philosophy on then move onto the next questions.

  • What influences your BELIEFS? (family, religion, spirituality, books, etc…)
  • What are your core BELIEFS that move you through your day? Is life for you or against you? Do you believe in the law of attraction? Do you believe in fate?
  • What do you TAKE a STAND for in the world outside of yourself? What don’t you tolerate?
  • What is the BIG CHANGE or IMPACT you want to make with what you believe in?
  • Why do you BELIEVE this? Is there a story or something you’ve overcome to make this true for you?

Now let’s go deeper about coaching from your STAND POINT.

  • Why do you want to coach?
What makes a good coach and a great coach?
  • Why do you feel coaching is important?
  • If you were asked what your thoughts were, about the area you want to coach in, what would you say?
  • What is the one thing you want people to know, your deep message you want them to know you for?

Want to take this to the level? Take all that you wrote and list out a bunch of quotes you can use, yes quote yourself. Write a manifesto and share this with those who you feel safe with sharing as you get started owning this for yourself.

Let yourself step more powerfully into what it is you offer into the world as a coach.

Before we get to the next step, please take a moment to validate what you BELIEVE and TAKE A STAND for right now and own it for yourself. Take this week to be with it and see how it feels for you.
