[Super excited to share with you a guest post by my friend + LWMP expert - Ane Axford MS, LMFT licensed mental health and relationship therapist who specializes in working with highly sensitive persons who have been diagnosed with all types of diseases. Enjoy! xo, Hillary ]
Disease is difficult. It doesn’t feel easy, fun, or satisfying. That is literally what dis-ease is. It is not being at ease. So, the obvious way to rectify it is to let things be easy. That may seem too easy. It is…but that’s the way it is. It’s so easy that we make it hard.
I like to compare disease to darkness and ease to light. One is not the opposite of the other, one is the lack of the other.
The trick is letting yourself want what you want and shining the light on your true feelings, trusting that they are just right and need no further justification other than the fact that you’re feeling them.
We have a culture of struggle, of right and wrong, and of fitting in. I work with those who have the genetic trait of high sensitivity; about 20% of the population has this trait. Being highly sensitive means being much more susceptible to disease. I am highly sensitive, and if you experience disease (autoimmune disorder), addiction, relationship frustration, mental/emotional stress, and difficulty with the typical 9 to 5 work model then you probably are too.
High sensitivity is NOT a weakness, a disorder, or a condition.
It is a neutral genetic trait, like having fair skin. There are things you have to do to care appropriately for yourself with this trait, just like staying out of the sun if you are fair skinned, but it is not inherently a negative thing. It simply IS the way you operate in the world. And, it IS for a reason.
So, why more disease or disorder among the sensitive? Because we are less likely to fit with the dominant culture, have a harder time pretending we do, and we feel it all. We are thin skinned and respond immediately to what is out of alignment.
When something feels uncomfortable, our tendency is often to say “What’s wrong with ME?” “What can I do to fix this feeling?” “What can I do to fix myself?”
THAT IS DISEASE. Let’s think about this from a logical perspective. You exist. (period) If you are reading this, you are here. Done. You ARE. So, that’s enough. You exist as you are, and whatever sensation you have exists as it is. So it all IS. It’s not a matter of right and wrong, it’s a matter of fit. A better question is “What doesn’t fit for me here?”
Things feel uncomfortable when they don’t fit together. Size 9 feet in size 8 shoes…ouch. There’s nothing wrong with the feet or the shoes, they just don’t fit.
Your emotions tell you the same thing.
When you want something you think you shouldn’t want or you don’t want something you think you should want.
This happens on a subconscious level. Discomfort is a gift. It’s a red flag to shine a light on what’s not working. So, sensitivity is a super power.
I experienced so many health issues: depression, anxiety, digestive issues, muscle pain (fibromyalgia), scoliosis, and sinusitis…oh the list goes on. My relationships were frustrating and I had no idea how I could “work”. I can see now that this was all my happiness not letting me settle. The life I was living didn’t fit for me.
I do what is easy now, what brings ease to my life, and those issues fall away. I eat in a way that feels good to ME, gluten, dairy, and sugar free with lots of veggies and protein. I speak in a way that feels good to ME, directly and honestly. I interact and love in a way that feels good to ME, intensely and completely.
What once felt like a weakness is now my greatest strength. My sensitivity allows me to lead powerfully, connect fully, and know what is most needed to bring greater ease to my life and the world. All I have to do is listen.
Your power is crying out to be expressed in the world through disease. So, let it be easy to be YOU.
3 simple tips to go from disease to ease in minutes:
1. Don’t settle, ever.
2. Explore your self, daily. What do you feel in your body and where (sensations) and what would feel better? You are always free to feel better + choose from the place of feeling good.
3. Explore the trait of high sensitivity as a way to understand yourself and your wants better.

I was just reading about HSP on my way back from a long trip this weekend, it also made me think of my daughter as she is a highly sensitive little girl, knowing just helps me raise a little girl who sees that sensitivity is okay and not a curse

Awesome Pat that you are in tune to support your little cutie. LOVE HER!
Thank you, I really liked this post.
It’s very helpful, and I’m glad to be reminded that sensitivity is a great power rather then a weakness, and I totally agree.
It can be difficult sometimes to just let go of the frames, and let yourself BE what you ARE, especially when others judge you for not being like them, or the way they want you to be.
I find it VERY important to surround myself with people who like me the way I am and full of love and support.
Really enjoyed your post, thanks again!

Olga, YES! It is definitely important to have other sensitive people in your life who get you, that you don’t have to explain or justify yourself to. There are often Highly Sensitive Person Meetup.com groups, so definitely check that out for your area.
Awesome to know about the Meetup.groups Ane + Thanks for writing such a rocking post. xo
What a great post, Ane! And thanks for sharing her gifts via your blog, Hillary. I am feeling something leading me to learn more about HSP. Could I be one? We’ll see. I know for sure, I am going to share this post with a friend who is suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis at 32 while going through a difficult divorce. I believe her disease is a direct result of her current life circumstances. I have a deep feeling this article and the first tip you offered, Ane, will speak to her on many levels. Thanks to both of you for your work in this world!
Ane did a great job for sure. Check in with her and drop her a line she will be happy to hear from you. You are so welcome Cheryl, thank you for your part too.
Hillary, you have a fabulous website! And Ane, I LOVED this post. I think I am definitely a HSP and will be doing some digging around your site and the web to learn more. I am super sensitive to shifts in other people’s attitudes or energy and I always respond immediately to what is out of alignment. Thanks to you both for this post! xo
