[Enjoy this guest blog post from Dana Schwartz, L.Ac., who is one of the experts in my Living Wellness Mastery Program. xo,  Hillary]

Are you running around feeling ANXIOUS, and feel like you have a never ending list of to do’s chasing you? I used to feel this way all the time.

I was working long crazy hours in the film biz, paying the bills, taking care of everyone but me, and going out late to relieve the stress and blow off steam.

Only to start the next day with a grand cup of coffee and a laundry list of to do’s.  I was living on a never ending hamster wheel.  A few years into this lifestyle I began to have panic attacks.  I didn’t know what they where, or what was happening to me.  I literally thought I was dying, or having a heart attack.  (which of course shoots the anxiety through the roof!)

After a few visits to the NYC emergency room, and being told nothing was wrong with me, I realized oh, this is anxiety!  A panic attack is just a big  dose of anxiety that has been built up with out being released.  Not wanting to get hooked on anti-anxiety medications, I began a long, rewarding, exploration of the health and healing world.

12 Years Later

I’m almost 100% anxiety free but I am still human.  Joyfully in my own Chinese Medicine + Acupuncture practice, I’ve been able to help so many others heal from the burden of anxiety.   Sometimes I do feel anxious, but what I’ve learned is that it is a SIGNAL, truly a gift, which brings me the awareness something is out of balance. It’s when I’m moving too quickly, doing too much, ingesting the wrongs food, or in the wrong environment, or even hanging with the wrong people. This is the power of being aware of the signal.

Chinese Medicine Is A Full Spectrum Medicine

A medicine which takes into account the entire picture of ones life.  So nothing is too small to matter. This pattern of anxiety is rooted in the energy of the Heart and we are all learning that our heart always knows. It’s a loud clear message to us when we feel this way, a message straight from our heart.

Try These 8 Simple Steps When You’re Feeling Anxious:

  1. Stop and sit down when you feel any feeling of anxiety.
  2. Make sure both feet firmly on the ground (not crossed) so you can also ground yourself as doing this practice.
  3. Breathe.  Take a few conscious breaths into your belly.
  4. Tune in and feel your body’s sensations.
Ask yourself, “what is going on, what has gotten me into this state.”
  5. Now, gently cradle your left wrist on the palm of your right  hand.
  6. Locate the SECRET Spot on your WRIST on your inner forearm where the skin is lighter, about three fingers’ width from the wrist crease. (see picture below)
  7. Hold it with a gentle pressure for 30 seconds or so initially, to see how it feels for you.  Begin with a firm pressure, and slowly ease up.
  8. Take 5 deep breaths in through your nose and release through your mouth, as you are holding the spot. Watch the anxiety dissolve.

*For some people, the feeling of relief is immediate. For others, it can take a while; try it for  5 minutes. (Boy do I wish those hospitals had told me this one.)

Using this powerful acupressure point is FANTASTIC at clearing anxiety, sometimes almost immediately!

Note: Sometimes you may not even know why you feel this way, the good news is that the breathing and the acupressure point together don’t care, they just WORK!

*Bonus Step ~ A sweet extra to keep the relaxing and soothing reaction is to place a drop of  lavender or neroli essential oil right on the SECRET spot.

That way your body and mind are reminded of the relaxation and the release you have so beautifully given yourself, and the oils also go into the bloodstream and sooth the nervous system. They actually cross the blood brain barrier, signaling the brain to release  a calming signal that spreads throughout the body. Powerful stuff!

Lastly, I want to share with you one of life’s other SECRETS, those of us who have anxiety are also highly attuned Sensitive beings with many gifts.  Truly when we feel anxious, it is because we are being over stimulated, or not paying attention to the more subtle aspects of our lives.

When you take the time to tune in, you will uncover so many amazing gifts and talents that are just waiting to be discovered within you.  The anxiety masks these gifts, because who can feel intuitive or creative when feeling anxious?  It’s just not possible.  You may get messages, but you can’t trust them, because you feel anxious!

Once theses gift start to be uncovered a tremendous flooding of joy comes into your lives, after all the flip side of anxiety, is the heart’s favorite emotion, JOY!

The next time you feel this way you, try these ancient secrets and let go of your anxiety.

Wishing you much joy, living wellness + an anxiety free day!

In wellness and service to you,
